Dear guest,

We’d like to welcome you to the Affentor-Schänke, an authentic and inviting restaurant and apple wine bar, where we hope you’ll feel right at home. We strive to present you with excellent service, food and beverages to make your visit enjoyable and allow you to escape the hectic of the day for a couple of hours.

The name “Affentor” (ape’s gate) is quite historical and is most likely derived from the original name “Ave Maria Tor” (~ Mother Mary’s Gate). In the 14th and 15th centuries, shepherds and wine growers went through the gate to get to their flocks and fields. However, they could never be sure if they were safe from thieves and such, so as they left the city walls through the gate, they always said “Ave Maria”. The abbreviation “Ave Tor” came from this, which became “Affe Tor” in the Frankfurt dialect.

The “Affentor” was built in the 14th century and destroyed in 1809. The 2 well-known houses that stand here today came much later. Historical documents from 1760 mention the building in which you are now sitting, at which point it was already a well-known stopping place for guests.
